Have you ever been mugged? (New York, Boston: movies, live in, gyms)

Someone once told me that if you live in New York all your life you will be mugged twice.

Well last night someone came up behind me and tried to "hug" me and I screamed. I think he was trying to take my purse, as he had been following me asking me for money for about a block. This was outside of the 34th street movies. I think the thing that saved me was I screamed, not because I was scared but because I was startled by being touched.

So I guess my question is...have you ever been mugged and if so where at/what happened?

Twice.Both in the ENY,Canarsie,Starrett City area.Nothing major.A bike stolen and a basketball (how stereotypical) that I actually fought for and still have to this day with the dried blood on it from when the 4 street urchins "bum rushed" me and busted my lip.But no B-Ball for you my brothers.And it was a Kevin Mchale signed ball.If they even knew who Kevin McHale was/is.

You should take self-defense. I always encourage female family members to take boxing or mma. It's a great exercise and you learn something that can be used in the real world. If want some boxing or mma gyms PM me.

I never been mugged but I've been robbed before. A couple of times in Ozone Park near East New York, and also in East New York itself and Far Rockaway.

Yes plenty of times I've been mugged for food too..But I know plenty of people who has been in NYC all their lives and has never been mugged. I've been mugged 5 times in my life and three of those times were in a small town in Michigan.

I haven't, but my boyfriend has been mugged once, at gunpoint, in Bushwick. It was just some dumb kid who later confessed after the police caught him.

Grew up on the Mexican border. Never mugged.
Lived in Houston. Never mugged.
In our third year now in NYC. Can't imagine being mugged.

Only place I ever had my property stolen? Austin. Four times in a single 12 month period.

Go figure.
