Bryant Avenue was the first place I lived in when my parents first moved to the Bronx in 1966. I also went to second grade at PS-6.

I recall one morning. It had to be Saturday or Sunday. My mother took me to a park located directly across the street from our apartment building early in the morning. I recall being the only one's there as we entered the small park. We were there no more than 5 minutes when my mother suddenly pulled me by the arm and hurriedly walked out of the park. Reason? Splattered blood.

Interesting! Sadly the prostitution activities are in plain view of the school children. The boss of PS 6 had this to say: We have tried everything, there is nothing we can do anymore...

The night before that one, also in the Fordham of the Bronx at 8 30 pm there was a shooting where three people were injured(A parent and two children).

Also that same night there was a fire nearby the 183rd st D train station at 11 30 pm and that is the Fordham area of the Bronx and the D train stopped at Tremont for 30 minutes. Another train came after 30 minutes and had to skip 183rd st subway station.

Frankly, this is very depressing and sketchy! I can not believe those shootings happened earlier than 1 am to 6am, especially for it being 11 30 pm and 8 30 pm. And for one of the same nights a fire nearby a subway station in that same area!?

My mom lives in the Bedford park area of the Bronx just 20 blocks north of Fordham. Bedford Park is a little bit better(actually noticeably better) than Fordham but every day I have to take the 4 train and D train through that area of the Bronx and it is depressing to hear those crime stories happening there recently.

For the past few months, I actually dealt with some sketchy things on the subway that goes through that area of the Bronx.

This one incident a few months ago at 6 30 pm on a Saturday I was on an empty subway going downtown(except for two other people on the subway) and someone was screaming on the subway, saying violent death threats, screaming in another person's face. I had to get off at the next subway station at Kingsbridge and that horrible person followed me and was pounding on the subway car I went in!

I am worried about being in that area of the Bronx(even Bedford Park) and do not like ever being there. I already felt like this before but now I feel even worse. I am worried for my mom there and I hope she will be ok.

It makes me dislike that area of the Bronx even more than I did before with these recent crime stories and trust me, I already strongly disliked that area of the Bronx.

Things got better in that area of the Bronx from the mid 1990s up to the year 2010 but now it seems like it is getting worse there again.

But is not just that area of the Bronx. I heard the entire city of New York City has a rising crime rate in the year 2010 and 2011. I hope it gets better soon.
I still think most area of New York City is still generally safe even if the crime rate is rising. And I think the crime rate will go down soon.
But some areas of NYC is not that safe, including that area of the Bronx.

Thanks goodness, I am not a product of my environment, including my mom, and some other people that unfortunately live in that area of the Bronx.

But that area of the Bronx in particular is such a semi ghetto wasteland to me. I wish I never had to live there. I never hang out around there in the past 4 years. Whenever I go outside, I always go to Manhattan and Brooklyn to hang out there.

I don't care what some people say. That area of the Bronx is still a bad area to live in. Don't move to that area of the Bronx!
This post comes from someone that had to live in that area of the Bronx for a long time.
I used to live by the Yankee Stadium stop for 7 years. Nothing ever happened to me there.

I've always heard bad things about the Fordham area. I rarely ventured there so can't comment personally.

One of my co-workers at the time went to Fordham. She was white and from the Midwest and she would say how the students used to be racially harassed on a pretty regular basis.

When I lived at 183rd and Washington Ave back in the early 70's, the Fordham Road/Grand Concourse area was considered an "upitty" part. There were several theaters (RKO is the one I most remember) and a big department store named Alexander's.

By the mid 70's we'd already moved out. But I remember going back to spend summer of 1976 with some family members and friends who still lived there. That summer, I had two gun related indicents. One guy pulled a gun on me, but only to tell me that he didn't feel like he needed it in my presence.

During the second incident, I was at a park around the Webster Avenue area. The park had an above ground pool, and only one entry/exit point. I was there with a friend, when a guy shot another point blank. The shooter began chasing yet another guy who coincidentally ran in our direction. Whatever little "buzz" my friend and I had, rushed right out of us as we ran in every which direction trying to avoid the idiot that was being chased. Everytime I looked back over my shoulder, the MF being chased was running behind my friend and I. My friend and I finally wised up and ran in different directions. The chasee ran out of the park. The chaser disappeared.

Washington Ave. is IMO one of the worst streets in South Bronx even today, but there is some new residential construction there nowdays especially in the lower part. (Morrisania)

This is no exaggeration! When folks point how bad Iraq and the third world is, I smirk to think the Bronx (daily arsons, crack epidemic, HIV, crime, etc.) at one time was worse.
Wow. I remember going to school in PS.91 right there on Aqueduct and 181st, picking up a needle, and asking my mom if I could touch it. This was way back in 1994 I believe.

Looking at photos from my early years here, what strikes me the most is the insane amount of graffiti written everywhere.

Thank you and Chacho Keva for sharing that with us.

Those sound like the days!

My husband and I (and our 2 kids) have lived in the Bronx for more than 7 years and have had no incidents. We also go down to Fordham road pretty regularly for shopping and the library etc. I'm white and can't remember even one racial comment in the whole time I've been here. Actually I was pickpocketed once during this time, but it was in Westchester.

In which area of the Bronx do you live? If you don't mind me asking.
