also lots of public nose picking goes on. won't get into details of this, but you can imagine. and you can stare at someone thinking that this will make them stop but nope. then you have to stop staring to avoid your stomach churning any further.
Nose picking? Aw, c'mon -- I'm sure you've seen public nose blowing -- without use of a tissue, that is. You know, where one presses a nostril closed with an index finger, and blows hard out the other one into the gutter?
Yes, folks -- yet another specialty courtesy of south Brooklyn.

hahaha - from the second article - a personal fave
This cultural difference is something that I have had trouble coming to terms with, as it is not an uncommon sight to see people walking down the street in their pyjamas at any time of day, and I still find it confusing that a sleeveless, high-neck tank top can attract so much attention in comparison to this
i know you must have seen the pajama wearers - they're everywhere!
I second that -- I live in Gerritsen Beach. Two BR place for $1200/mo. Lots of families and single-family homes. However the commute is 1.5 hours to Midtown. Also, in Southern Brooklyn you won't find a trendy or chic lifestyle. But there are lots of good restaurants and recreational opportunies, especially if you like the ocean.
Owning a car here is actually do-able. In fact, a car will come in handy on the weekends or if you want to go out late.
You also will find that everyone here is a native. Not many re-locators like you'll find in Manhattan and the trendier parts of Brooklyn. However, I've found everyone in the neighborhood to be very friendly and accepting and we've made some true friendships here - even though we talk with a funny-sounding upstate accent
Other solid Southern Brooklyn neighborhoods are Bay Ridge, Dyker Heights, Midwood, Marine Park, and Sheepshead Bay (which is heavily Russian)
If you want twice the space for half the money and like to live in a quieter area and maybe even have a little backyard -- the longer commute is worth it. If you want to be in "the center of it all" - then maybe Southern Brookyn isn't for you - but be prepared to pay much more.
definitely move to gerritson beach. the boys in bensonhurst always enjoy a fresh one or a new boy to initiate. see you at the bantry
