Possibly moving to Brooklyn
Hi Everyone-
So I am a young, 25 yr old, single female. I may be taking a job in Brooklyn soon but I have never been to New York so I am not sure where to look for living. My biggest criteria is that I prob wont have a car so I need somewhere with easy access to public transportation and preferably no more than a 20min commute. The job will not pay that much so somewhere safe yet very affordable is a bonus. Any thoughts?

needs more details. esp how much you are making/can afford.
The southern string of Bensonhurst/Gravesend/Sheepshead Bay is generally the best bet for an mix of affordability and safety.

ill only be making a bit over 3000 a month....so not much for new york. I am willing to live anywhere really within 20mins of brooklyn, or further for the right place! I am willing to live alone or with roomies (as long as they are not psycho!)

Brooklyn is huge - if it were a city in its own right, it would be the 4th largest city in the US. So it's not specific enough to say "within 20 minutes of Brooklyn." If you already have a job lined up, then you should know what area it is in.

Bay Ridge, Kensington and Midwood (all Brooklyn) are all safe and decent neighborhoods that aren't too far from there.
You should really take a look at a good map of Brooklyn and also look at the mta.info site so you can see where the subways are.

Just average in 60 a month for TV and internet depending. No you probably won’t have a car. Bikes are good for transportation in Brooklyn. Do not fret over commute times. If you’ve never been to NYC then you have no clue what you are getting yourself into. Just get comfy shoes and socks, have a metro pass and money... Psycho roommates are right of passage until you can afford a place of your own. Endlessly searching for a sane place to live near good food is your new life.
