While that was an irritating article, I've got to admit, I was out in the Rockaways last weekend and have never seen so many "artsy young people." 90% of everyone at Ft. Tilden beach seemed to fit that general grouping, also many at Riis Park and even about 5 tables of them at The Wharf bar... not sure what changed in the past 3 years or so; it's really noticable.

As some have already mentioned they have places where they stay for the summertime but majority of them don't live by Far Rock nor would they choose to.

That is such hyperbole. Rocaway in my opinion is way nicer than Coney Island which gets much more polluted during the summer. Also, many of the areas are currently going under revitalization or have been cleaned up. If you go around Beach 116, you'll see what I am talking about. Heck, if you go on the complete opposite end (80's to 60's) there's plenty of new beautiful houses that have been developed.

And who cares about always being in Manhattan? Sometimes people like to get away from the hustle and bustle of the big city and escape to the waters. Manhattan has no great places to swim in anyway.

It's starting to become a premier summer destination for the city - again.

I think it makes total sense that as more and more people realize that we are ALL permanently returning to a much less lavish world, people will return to the old lifestyle where there were summer vacation areas within the city.

A co worker of mine who lives in Silver Beach says that when she was a girl all the houses in Silver Beach were summer beach bungalows owned by people who lived only 20 or 30 mins away,in another part of The Bronx, the rest of the year.

NYC has a long history of summer beach communities in Brooklyn,Queens and The Bronx, established by NYC residents who took the subway to their summer houses.

Sounds like you haven't really seen much of the Rockaways or maybe only seen pictures of the bad parts. It's not all the same at all.

I bet when the hipsters get a little more established there ,all the "real NY'ers" who see no potential there because they have heard it's a dump, will start complaining that the hipsters took their beloved Rockaways away from them.

Sometimes outsiders have sharper eyes for potential because natives eyes have become jaded.

Don't mind DoomDan...from past observation, he considers tame neighborhoods such as Ozone Park and Woodhaven in Queens danger zones. God forbid what he would think about where you live.

It's about time the Rockaways get a change and something positive going on. Too bad I don't live there anymore to witness it.
