I always wanted to become a bartender and I heard that in order to become one you must become a busser or a barback and work your way to the top.

What should I do to get to the top?!

First you need to earn a bartender license, it takes like two weeks, as far as I remember.

There is no requirement for any sort of licensing to be a bartender in New York City. If you're referring to those bartender schools, I know a good number of bartenders, and not a single one has ever gone to one or knows anyone that has. The general consensus is that you either have a friend already bartending at a bar that can vouch for you, or you pay your dues by starting out as a barback until they need a bartender.

Interesting. I've briefly worked as a bartender and a license was a requirement, I also knew a couple of bartenders that all took those classes and they were required.

If "Diana" is actually your name then busser, server, or hostess is what you are after. Females are almost never hired as barbacks here, nor are they hired for the consolidated busser and barback positions often called "bussback".

Go for hostess, busser, or server positions BUT... understand that a server job can be as hard or harder to get, and as hard or harder to do well, as a bartending job.
