My girlfriend and I are moving to NYC from out of state and applied for our first place in NYC today! It is in Yorkville and seems pretty great! It is really quite hard to find a place from such a distance but luckily we did have friends in town who could check out places, photograph it and get back to us. We were lucky to find a sublease starting when we needed it through the remainder of the lease - with possibility of re-signing.

We submitted the usual paperwork today and are nervously waiting! I am the sole income earner but do earn 45-50x rent. My girlfriend has a much higher credit score than me but no income. Each of us at least have several grand in savings accounts. We're hoping for the best! This is quite an experience.

Thanks Cida! I am hoping if they do try to deny us, that they're willing to negotiate. Since its a short term sublet + option to resign, I can put down 4 months between rent and deposit up front (covering the entire term really) so, I presume a reasonable business person would be okay with that. The area is great, its no fee and rent stabilized - so I figure we should try as hard as we can!

Mc - I am an attorney for the federal government and my girlfriend is looking for a position now as an attorney in NYC. Law school wasn't cheap so my income/expenses ratio is not really great! But under a new loan repayment plan for federal loans, as a federal employee for 10 years, you barely make payments on the interest and the rest is forgiven 10 years later - so while my debt looks terrible - the monthly payment isn't that high

We found out today that we got the apartment! I'm really looking forward to moving to the area - it seems great. Probably going to be a hectic subway trip to lower Manhattan, but we got a great price so its worth it!

Remember that from the far east side, you also have the option of taking the M15 Select service down 2nd Avenue.

I used to ride the M15 all the time and I hated it with a passion, and I was rather skeptical as to the efficacy of this new service, but I have to say, between the expedited boarding and the limited stops, it really does make the east side commute more feasible on the bus. If you add in the elimination of that crosstown trip to the Lexington Avenue subway, which is the closest line from where you'll be, it might actually work for you. Definitely check it out.

Good luck!

Hectic subway ride, maybe. Crowded, definitely. But...c'est la vie on the Lexington Avenue line (at least until the 2nd Avenue subway opens for business--sometime in the coming decade!)

In any event, welcome to NYC.
