looking to move back to nyc. trying to find a studio or a 1bedroom for around 1000 manhattan area. yes its possible i dont want to hear about how its not. I just need a good company to go with who won't be a waste of time and there are so many out there, i would like to hear some of your experiences and the places who actually helped you out. thank you so much.
I'm sure it's possible to find a place for $1000. But I'm guessing that with a less expensive apartment, the landlord would be less likely to use a broker. I think you should start with places like Craigslist. Also, I think you should not start with an attitude about wasting your time. When you're looking for something difficult, that's how you find it - by spending a lot of time.

The LL isn't paying the fee, so why would he care? LL use brokers to screen appilcants. At that rent a lot of screening is necessary.
The problem is that at that rent, it really isn't worth a Manhattan broker's time. Why bother, with the same effort a broker can rent an apartment for twice the rent/fee.
@ the OP, craigslist isn't working out, because there arn't any realistic $1000 apartments to be posted!!! Just reality.
You need to reasses. That said what do you think of Washington Heights. Might find something there.
In any event, whatever you might find will be a complete dump!
I'm a real estate agent. I put your search in both my database, OLR, my friend at Ardor NY's and Broker's NYC. You're looking at Inwood if you don't want to take the time to hunt down a rent stabilized apartment, and it is also summer so prices are higher.
We had an $853 one bedroom in the East Village come up last week, but I don't think it was on the market for more than a day. If you do find a deal, make sure you move on it quickly and have all your paperwork ready.
And don't be surprised when you call an agent and they laugh you off the phone or hang up. Good luck. You will need it.

IF a broker laughs at you or hangs up...that person is a IDIOT and has no business class...... just a greedy person who some day may be out of a job because of his / her stupidity!
It may take some time to find -------- DON't Give UP!

Would be kind enough to expand on what 1k and under Manhattan apartments are generally like? I'm picturing the old SRO hotels, myself!
Sorry it has taken me a while to respond. If it is rent stabilized and less than 1,000, 99% chance that it will be a dump. Landlords have no incentive to renovate a stabilized or controlled apartment. Inwood actually has very few landlord owned apartments under $1000, as most one beds are pushing $1150. Generally you will get an outdated kitchen, pre-war details, old hardwood floors and linoleum/tile floors throughout and an old bathroom.
