+1 TOTALLY AGREE. Couldnt have said it better! New York City does NOT need anymore transplants! We are already overwhelmed with your kind and we cant fit anymore! The original NYC has been destroyed by all these transplants bringing their native disease of personalities to this once unique city. To be honest with you, i dont think you know what your in for; this city will swallow you whole and spit your torn and tattered spirit right back to west bumblef**k wherever it is your from! JUST STAY WHERE U ARE

I don't get why transplants get so much flack from native New Yorkers. We're all Americans. No one cares if you were born and raised in this city, if you can't compete, you will lose your spot, simple as that. You can be from Podunksville, Nebraska, if you have the education and experience to compete in the city, you deserve to be here. It's survival of the fittest, just because you were born and raised here doesn't make you exempt.

Too late, NYC is already ruined. But I agree, for most of these people, NYC will chew them up and spit them out.

Lot's of places will chew you up and spit you out with the job market they way it is these days. It all just comes down to finding a job that pays enough to meet your current standards of comfort that doesn't totally suck. The rest of the bs walks.

Where did your parents come from? What about their parents, or their grandparents?
Maybe you should GET OUT and GO BACK TO WHERE EVER IT IS YOUR FAMILY ORIGINATED FROM!!!!!
By some of the peoples logic on here, they wouldnt be in NYC either.

What exactly do you mean by IT? Actually writing code or mainly setting up servers and such?
On the development side I lived in Chicago a couple years then moved to NYC. The tech job market in NYC is much more diverse and interesting. NYC has seen a large growth in startup activity in the last few years.

New York is mean city. Like others folks mentioned, it will "chew you up and spit you out." That phrase is not just designated for small town mouses that move here. Certainly you want to live here at least once for the experience but - jobs and money today are scarce for the most part. There are some real junk yard dogs in the workforce today fighting over their positions. Jobs can be hard to find here, even with minimum wage type work. The original poster has good experience in the IT field, but employers require "New York City Job Experience".

Good grief, this thread is full of fear mongering. Last spring I was living in Chicago, making around 75k as a software developer. It took me all of 2 weeks to land 3 jobs offers in NYC, and I even had to cancel 4 other interviews. I now make 6 figures and have great benefits.
I did this without having NYC job experience. I did this performing my job search remotely (I did fly in for on-site interviews). I went to a little known school in Indiana. I have no connections in the city. I simply worked hard on my resume, applied to jobs online, and practiced hard for interviews. It's possible to come from afar and succeed in NYC, without the advantages of nepotism, an Ivy League Education, connections to higher-ups, or a world-class background.

ahhaahhahhahahahaahahh
I was going through my old threads and saw this one.
I guess a little update for you guys:
I moved to NYC with a 85k/yr + bonus salary.
currently living in Astoria paying 700 bucks a month + about 80 bucks in all utilities.
I work in midtown east a couple of blocks from grand central. high up with amazing views of the city.
love my company and loving it here so far (cept for the inconsiderate dirty people who enjoy littering the city).
