What's the best way to get from Newark airport to Midtown Manhattan around mid-afternoon on a weekday? I won't have much luggage and I don't really want to take a cab.
The cheapest would be to take the AirTrain from your terminal to the Rail Link station, then hop on NJ Transit, transfer in Newark Penn Station or Secacus (I believe those points are correct) to a train that'll take you into New York Penn Station. I'm not sure of the exact price, but it's somewhere in the neighborhood of $10
Or you can take a shuttle. Go to the ground transportation counter in your terminal and they'll arrange it for you. It'll be in the neighborhood of $20-$30.
There are also buses. I see them all the time, one I remember says that it leaves every 15 minutes and costs $15. Also inquire about this at the ground transportation counter if you're interested.
I drive from Harlem to Newark Airport and back everyday and at non-rush hour times it take me 25 -30 on a decent day, depending on the route I take.
Unless your coming in the early morning, where you'd be traveling with the morning rush hour traffic, you should be okay going over the road.
PATH doesn't go to the airport. You'd have to transfer at Penn Station via 62 bus. This is actually the cheapest way, but cumbersome if the op is in a rush. Keep in mind you still have to transfer at Journal Square in JC to get to Midtown on the PATH.

There are several options. The fastest is to spend $15 and take the AirTrain to the Newark Airport Rail station, and then take the NJT Northeast Corridor or North Jersey Coast Line to NY Penn Station (not Newark Penn Station).
You can also take the #62 bus to Newark Penn Station and take either the train to NY Penn Station or take the #108 bus to the Port Authority Bus Terminal. This will cost $7 if you take the train, or $7.50 for the #108 ($1.50 for the #62 plus the bus or train to Manhattan)
Finally, if you go to Newark Penn Station, you can take the PATH to Grove Street and transfer to a train to 33rd Street. This is the cheapest ($1.50 + 1.75 for the PATH), but it is the slowest.
Bus to Newark Penn Station...PATH to Herald Square (or World Trade Center) or anywhere along Sixth Ave. That route is very easy and cheap without too much luggage to drag around.
