Two Texas males moving to Harlem for grad school. August 1 move in. Ideally would like to be able to walk to Columbia, but will also consider being close to 1 train. Looking for a 2 bedroom under $2,000. I understand the neighborhood changes quickly. I'd like some recommendations on good blocks to consider and unsafe areas to stay away from.

Move next to the school it will cut down on wasted commuter time that you can use for your studies and social life.

I live up in Hamilton Heights, in the 140's and Broadway. I've got a 1 bedroom in an elevator building with laundry for $1,125, so you should definitely be able to do a 2 bedroom for under $2,000.

I take the 1 train from 145th downtown quite frequently. Columbia would be a short hop, about a 10 minute train ride plus a couple minutes to walk to and from the station.

The neighborhood could be better, but I've never really felt unsafe. I go to and from my car and all hours of the night and have never had an issue. If you go over a block or two east there are some nice looking brownstones that make that area look a lot better.

I am a real estate broker, there is literally one apartment available close to Columbia. Your best bet is to move to the 30's or 40's. Anywhere along the 1 train is ok as Harlem is safe these days. You'll want to avoid East of Saint Nicholas Park in the 30's.

Does it rent more easily than calling them the 130's and 140's?

Hell, my neighborhood of Hamilton Heights is the Upper West Side according to half the posts on Craigslist. Also, going by them the UWS apparently extends well into Inwood...

Your nabe isn't *really* a nabe until it becomes hot and some broker comes up with new label for it, so they can sell it easier.

So soon, we should see such designations as "CUNY Heights" and "TriBe145".

The Upper East Side extends to New Rochelle!

FOMIHO is the new hot area: it translates as 4 miles North of Houston!
