Since you said you've been living in the Dominican Republic for the last
14 years, I'm not sure if you can come back to the US if you were only
a green card holder.

LOSING PERMANENT RESIDENCY THROUGH ABANDONMENT

When traveling abroad, lawful permanent residents should be careful to not remain out of the country more than six months at one time. Absence of six months up to 364 days may raise a presumption of an intent to abandon residency. Absences of one year or more may break residency resulting in a loss of permanent resident status. If a trip requires an absence of one year or more for school, a job, or family emergency it is imperative that an application for a reentry permit be made before leaving the country. A reentry permit serves as a valid entry document for absences of more than one year, but less than two. Permanent Resident Aliens can not obtain a valid re-entry visa after departing from the United States. One must apply prior to departing. The issue of long absences may be revisited at the time of naturalization. Naturalization generally requires five years as a permanent resident. Even with a re-entry permit an absence of more than 365 days will require a new waiting period of approximately four more years to be naturalized.

You are a permanent resident but lived in DR for 14 years? You might have an issue then.

track down that no good husband of yours

-or-

give your kids up for adoption- you're not a fit mother to have 3 children and no job, place to live, or experience/education.

Unless I missed something, OP didn't refer to the man as her husband, only as the father of her children.

OP, is he your husband? Did your greencard come through marriage to him?

I am an Australian living in NYC and if I were in your shoes I would move to Australia. You would get so much more help from the government. I dont know how some one in your shoes would be able to make ends meet here.
Our education system is very different to here and we can do a lot of things work based where companies train you rather than getting into so much debt like here.
Good luck! You will make it however you choose.

What about going back to Australia? Do you have any friends or family there? Are you getting any financial help from your Ex?

Hi Everyone,
As the father of my kids,he could not get a visa to come here,(very difficult for Dominicans)I would commute back and forth, not to loose my permanent res.status,I would be sure not to pass the 6 months out of the country rule.No I did not marry for residency,I got that in 79 when I lived in Puerto Rico with my dad.No I did not get married to the father of the kids,it would not of helped our visa issues and we planned it once we were out of DR.Well, she snatched him up within months of being in Canada. He married a few months ago.(probably so he would not have to leave the country)but that is not my problem now! So,I don't have anyone in Australia, although I know that it is a great country, but I am really terrified to go so far away to a foreign land with three young children by myself.I do realize that NY is not going to happen for us.I thought about west palm beach, but again, high unemployment and I have limited higher education,so landing something decent to support my kids may be very difficult.I would really love to offer them a neighbor hood with families and weather with seasons and a safe environment(hard to find these days)but something like that, but again, what will I do for work.I adore my kids and please don't suggest to give my children away, and I am not fit, because I have cared for and loved my children since the day they were born and I love them very much, can't imagine to be without them.I will make it with God's help, they are healthy and happy kids so far and we may not be able to have much, but we love each other dearly.I call them three times a day and it is really hard for me to be far from them.I will make it and for those who have given me encouragement,I thank you for your support.
