It's 12-14 miles by road depending on the route you take.

Google Maps

LaGuardia is closer to Times Square. Yes taxis are expensive here, but I rarely use them so I can't give you better information.

The problem is, not all airlines use both airports. So depending on which airline you're talking about, you may not have an option.

Between JFK and Manhattan is a $45.00 flat fee plus tolls/tip.

Laguardia to midtown has usually cost me ~$30-40 depending on time of day/traffic.

I also recommend this bus New York Airport Service Transportation - JFK- LGA- Manhattan for easy/affordable transportation to/from the airports. You can take it to Port Authority and then you are right in the center of everything.

Is there like a tram or a airport bus I can take from the airport to the hotel? I know in SF and LA when I went, we paid $20 and it took us to the hotel and airport back.

Is your hotel in Times Square? Port Authority will be a 5-10 minute walk or less from most of the Times Square hotels. If you pay for a cab, they will take you directly to your hotel. You can also take public transportation from the airport to the hotel, but if you haven't been to NY before (and it sounds like you haven't) I would recommend this bus that I linked you to, or the cab, just to make it easier.

And if you do want a shuttle to and from the hotel, there is this one: http://www.supershuttle.com/ I haven't personally used them though so I only know from hearsay.

Let us not forget Newark Airport in New Jersey, which was there before Laguardia or JFK. Story goes Mayor Laguardia flew in there back in the dirty thirties though his plane ticket said New York. He fumed that if his ticket said New York, he should land in New York. Newark is more distant than Laguardia but nearer than JFK. There are buses to midtown.
