The rest of the state would be in trouble, losing a tax base the size of the city's. Not long ago, some representative from a district in the Adirondacks actually made a proposal to the state legislature that the southern boundary of New York State be redrawn along the south end of Westchester County. In other words, he was proposing that New York City be excluded! I was hoping the rest of the state legislature would actually be idiotic enough to consider that proposal.
Imagine a New York State without the city. Not only do they lose the tax base, but half of their electoral votes--making the state worthless as a power influencing Presidential elections. And on our side of the coin...no more oppressive regulations from Albany. I tell you, it practically brings a tear to this native Brooklynite's eye. Long live the State of New Netherland, and may Albany stew in its own juices for centuries to come!
Funny that you mentioned this proposal to split the state of NY. Recently in the general NY forum a few upstate NY residents mentioned that they would support this idea. Claiming that NYC's interests always come before the rest of the state and is oppressing them.
My views on the topic were pretty much the same as yours. NYC is the money maker for the entire state of NY. According to what I read as of 2005 NYC had a gross metropolitan product of $1.13 trillion dollars....making NYC the largest regional economy in the United States and the second largest city economy in the world. By the end of 2008 NYC controlled 40% of the worlds finances...which made it the largest financial center in the world!
The rest of the state would have to be plain stupid to cut off the hand that feeds them.
blah blah blah, you can itemize this into a single building in the city, or just one borough, or whatever you want.
Moral of the story is New York City is a part of the larger New York State- and it was built that way so it's difficult, and pointless to imagine a world where it isn't like that. It wouldn't make any sense.

...Which is precisely why I wish they'd go ahead and make a formal proposal to throw us out! Imagine how long some of those legislators would be in office when their constituents wake up one morning to discover that without the cash cow that is New York City to support them, they have to start paying their own way.
And with no representation in the US House or Senate like DC ?
Sounds like a Republican plot to disenfranchise 8M voters.
What would happen to the rest of NY State ? It would become a red state.
Actually, New York State minus New York City was about 55% for Obama. And it becomes even stronger for Obama if you remove Long Island, which was marginal, and even stronger if you remove Rockland, Orange, Putnam and Westchester Counties, as any reasonable proposal splitting off Upstate from the city would do.
Actually, it might be a purple state, with blue cities(and some suburbs) and red in most of the rest of the state.
I seem to recall NY State being very blue all the way across the board in the 2010 midterms (when broken down by congressional districts) Were not talking Texas or Arizona here.
Never happen. Upstate is culturally miles apart from the NYC/Tri-State area, I get that, but lot's of other states experience this same thing. NorCal despises SoCal. Cook County is hated by the rest of Illinois. South Florida has nothing in common with planhandle/gulf coast Florida, and on and on.
I wouldn't go that far. Actually, Upstate NY, if it was it's own state would be on par with NC in terms of GDP(around 9th in the country). That's now, in spite of declining manufacturing. Luckily, metros up here have been reinventing themselves slowly, but surely.

So let me ask you a question: would YOU prefer a New York State without the city that lent its name to the proceedings?
