This took me by surprise, finding out that there were so many working farms in the Bronx. The story says 150 gardens, of which 80% grow and sell food. I guess its needed as a study cited here calls the Bronx the least healthy county in the state, partly because the access to fresh healthy food is lousy. The working farm they talk about, La Finca Del sur, is 2.5 acres in the South Bronx. There' still that much empty land in the Bronx for all this? Who knew? But I do wonder if food grown in all the smog, dirt, and god knows what in the soil in NYC are any healthier than Mickey Ds or Kennedy Fried Chicken.
Other interesting thing was a mention of the chickens in Brooklyn. Years ago, I used to see chicken coops in E Harlem on occasion, but never knew they were in other parts of the city as well--and still are. Guess all we're missing now is a cattle ranch--maybe someplace in Queens or Staten Island?
Well I'm not sure about cattle ranches exactly but where I'm from in south Queens neighbors would walk their lambs occasionally. Gave our dogs a little start. Not to mention the roosters crowing at crack of dawn! Not sure if this is legal but hey.

A little old lady I once knew, a Hadassah volunteer and all that, upon reading an article about a Jewish farmer somewhere in the Midwest, shook her head and muttered: "A Jewish farmer? I've never heard of such a thing. We've always been city folk."
Similarly, when Shirley Chisholm, the 1970s Black congresswoman first arrived in Congress, she was assigned to a seat in the Agriculture Committee. She said in irritation, "I know there's a book called A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and I'm from Brooklyn, but this is ridiculous--I know nothing about agriculture."
