Hustla, Soundview or the area to the west of the Bx River, W. Farms, Morrisania, Hunts point etc? I always thought Soundview was better, quieter, safer because it's technically on the eastern half of the boro which site east of the bx River and I see a lot of small houses there
The neighborhoods mentioned are also nearby high crime/poverty neighborhoods. The poverty and crime did not stop at the river. The houses in Soundview are multifamily and as a result many have become room for rent. Some city SRO's. Small apartment buildings. Used to be a good amount of abandoned houses but most have been renovated by now. There are also tenements scattered around and high concentrations of them by the El as you see in the above photos. There are also a ton of NYCHA developments in the Soundview area, mostly built in the 1950's. One of the largest concentrations of public housing in the country. Also plenty of HUD, section 8, and other low income/subsidized housing.
It also contains a high crime Operation Impact Zone and two Operation Impact transit stations. In the early 90's it was selected for Operation Weed And Seed along with Mott Haven and East NY.
At it's peak the local precinct (43rd) had 70 murders a year, most of these murders occured in the Soundview area.
What is the percentge of different races here like black, white, hispanic, asian?
Soundview is almost entirely Black and Hispanic. These days more Hispanic then anything. Over 50%. Largest Hispanic group in the area is Puerto Rican. Largest Black group is African American. There is a good number of Jamaicans, Africans, and Dominicans on certain blocks in the neighborhood these days.
In 1999 an African immigrant, Amadou Diallo, was gunned down in the Soundview area by a plain clothes NYPD unit. He was mistaken for the worst rapist in NYC history, who was also a resident of the neighborhood. Diallo was unarmed but did not know english well (also nervous) and was shot at 41 times as he reached for his wallet to show identification.
Mural dedicated to Diallo, down the block from where he was shot:
