if you are doing it for yourself is one thing as long as you look beyond just what your paycheck looks like.

what you have taken out each week may or may not be representive of your real after tax income when you actually file.

perhaps they should be holding another 100 bucks a week out of your check or maybe you should be getting 100 bucks a week more and just end up getting back when you file or paying more when you file.

In terms of landlords that do rentals and the 40x the rent rule, they look at your W2s/paystubs/employer letter stating salary. If that number is 40x the rent, you qualify. If you have a trust fund or some type of alternative income, they want those assets to come out to 40x the rent as well. The landlords in Manhattan look at your income before taxes, among other documents they require.
