When I first decided to look at places in The Bronx I looked at apartments in buildings on the lower concourse. Some of them were great but when I hung out in the area and walked on some of the blocks just off the concourse after hours I decided against.I kind of got the feeling I would feel confined to a very small area between my building and the subway. The upper concourse, above Bedford Park boulevard has a whole different feel..... very tranquil up there.

I think you answered the question. The crime ridden side streets is what keeps the prices down.

Ive heard quite a few people rave about that northern section.

Some of those buildings are truly in great shape though. Some of them were high end buildings up into the 70s. So they were very well maintained. I have an older coworker who lived in one of them during that time and he woukd tell me stories about quite a few yankees living there.

Bedford Park is very nice. The buildings north of Bedford Park Blvd (on Grand Concourse) are in excellent condition. A lot of doctors' offices are in those buildings as well. In addition, unlike other shopping strips like Fordham Rd and Jerome Av (over by 208th St), Bedford Park Blvd is filled with small businesses and restaurants such as Carmine's Pizza, Bedford Cafe, just to name a few.

The only downside to Bedford Park is that the riff-raff coming from points south of Bedford Park (which usually involve teens with too little money and too much time in their hands without parent involvement) is slowly spreading north into parts of Bedford Park (usually on the side streets like Valentine Av).

I'm leaning toward the Fordham area becasue it seems more reasonably priced. I've walked around the area just north of Fordham Road and east of Webster and West of Sedgwick. It seems quite safe with all of the imporvements made in the area. I would like to hear from people who actually live in the area, not from people who are blinded by racist preconceptions.

I remember reading an article in the Norwood news about the area and its drug trade business. On some corner the local Catholic church put a make shift crucifix on a pole at a corner of some street because of all the people who died due to drug related incidents.

Fordham Bedford or North Fordham, not Norwood.
