In my area supermarkets are open until 9-10 pm and many restaurants are open until 11pm-1am. There is also a car service office, a CVS, a Dunkin Donuts as well as the subway which are open 24/7. So some parts of the city are open 24/7 and other parts do go to sleep.

I think the only thing you really can't buy in NYC 24/7 are clothes and furniture, and hardware

Everything's shifted to the Far East; Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore. There you'll find cities that never sleep. We had a good run make no mistake. I was doing NYC in the good old days or bad old days, however you want to look at it. It was truly electrifying, the center of the universe!

What do those cities have that New York doesn't?

True although the Target in Elmhurst, Queens is open until 11pm-midnight which is pretty late in the day for buying those items.

You can always find something to do 2 or 3am in this city.
I agree. The phrase doesn't mean every single store/bar/restaurant is open 24 hrs. Just that one can find a 24 hour place relatively easy compared to other cities. You don't realize how much you take this for granted until you venture out into other areas of the country where everything including mass transit literally shuts down after 8 pm (in some smaller cities it's 5pm!) & you find nothing open.

In my mom's place, I can count three restaurants/bars that close at 4 am and one that is open 24 hrs and a 24 hr Duane Reade all within a 2 or 3 block radius from her apt. And even at 3 am the train, restaurants & sidewalks while not crowded do have people walking around. They're not all party types either. It's a mix of them, students and late shift workers going home.
