Hello all,

What a great forum this is. So much information. This is my first post.

Anyway, I am moving to NYC in a few weeks and am in the process of looking for an apartment. I have found a unit I like, but had a few questions regarding the area. The apartment is located in the UWS on W96th just west of CPW. I love the UWS, but was hoping to be a bit south of 96th st.

Is this a safe area? I've heard it can get a bit sketchy just north of here, but it looked fine to me.

How is the nightlife in the area?

Gyms? Grocery shopping?

Good area for dog-owners?

Any info that can be provided would be helpful.

Thanks so much.

Is this a safe area? I've heard it can get a bit sketchy just north of here, but it looked fine to me. Area is pretty safe. Lots of young professionals, families, and senior citizens. Little to no sketchy people from 99 st to 60 st. And north of 99th st can be come sketchy but it's not until you reach Harlem where the neighborhood changes. Always be vigilant when you are out at night regardless on how safe the neighborhood is reported on being.

How is the nightlife in the area? You have bars and you're close to Columbia U and Barnard College. There's a lounge on 72nd st called Columbus 72.

Gyms? Grocery shopping? You have a plethora of those things.

Good area for dog-owners? You have Central Park. Are you that greedy??

Let me welcome you to NYC by saying: Welcome to New York, motherf*****!!!!

West side YMCA on 63rd CPW and Broadway. Make sure to buy a day pass to try out the gym before signing anything.

If you're willing to sell your arm to work out there. NYSC is plenty good enough for most people.

It's a good area. Good for dog lovers? You're right next to Central Park, you tell me!

Equinox is expensive. NYSC's rate seems to be around $85/month. That's fairly typical for a gym in the city, no?

Some companies provide gym membership discounts. For example I will probably pay $110 monthly at Equinox with the discount rather than the standard $170-180.
