Where to buy a cheap area rug
Hi all,
So, apparently it's common place in NYC leases to make renters cover their floors. I understand the whole noise aspect. But since moving is taking $$$, I need to find me some cheap area rugs that will do the job.
Where do you all shop for your rugs? I heard about ABC outlet, but is that actually cheap, or is that originally $1000, and now 50% so $500?
But because I'm freaked out about bed bugs, definitely new rugs. Any second hand rugs are not currently under consideration.
Thanks!

What's your problem with bedbugs? Are you not a friend of nature?

I got some cheap ones from this place when they were still in Brooklyn but looks like they may have moved to way out in eastern Queens (J.A.G. CARPET WHOLESALERS, INC. - Monday to Saturdays 9:00 - 6:00 P.M ( E.S.T. ), ) ABOUT US
I went to ABC outlet and the rugs were still expensive.
Maybe try searching online for places that sell industrial and classroom carpeting. They may have remnants or can do bound area rugs, which is I think what the JAG place I mentioned above does.

yee8p,
The ABC outlet is TERRIFIC (across the street from the Main store.) But go right into the basement.
They had a bunch of bound remnants in a beautiful red oriental pattern that I fell in love with...I wasn't sure of the size I wanted so I dilly-dallied and when I went back they had sold out about the 20 of them.
Small was around 5 x 8 for $99 and 8 x 10 for $199 as I recall. Trouble was they wanted either $100 or $200 to deliver them???? So you need a plan to get them home. Huge remnants that will fill an entire room are in abundance at very low prices. The place will blow you away.
Keep to the FRONT of the basement...in the back they have prices that would startle a Maharajah.
Shopping is nice because the downstairs clerks don't pester you
Go in an browse and I guarantee you'll find someting. Costco has nice thick 8 x 12's for $299...unimaginably heavy though.
Getting this kind of stuff home is a chore without a car or a compliant driving friend.
There is a joint I found on the West side First Avenue near 78th called the CARPET FACTORY. Small place but they have lots of remnants quite cheap...I think haggling skills might come in handy, but I don't have them. If I find something I want there, I can reasonably roll it home with a hand truck but I think they quoted me a $40 delivery charge (not sure though,) so not bad.

Just curious... how closely do you all follow the 80% rule? I'm looking at sizes of area rugs etc and doing some math. 80% really means I need to put rugs underneath my furniture where I would never be walking on......
And thanks for all the suggestions. I'm checking them out.

I don't know anyone in a rental with 80% of her floor covered. We have one rug in the living room and one in the bedroom (Ikea=cheap).

That 80% rule is bogus.
My feeling is that if landlords want the place carpeted they should install wall-to-wall carpeting before they rent the place out.
Right now I haxe zero coverage and with with my planned 8 or 9 x 12 in the Living room and a 6 x 9 under the dining table (maybe, maybe not...they are food magnets,) I'll have around 25% coverage and I have no plans on putting anything in the bedroom. It's hard enough to clean under the beds with a bare floor.
I MIGHT put a runner down a 10 foor hallway...but probably not.
If anyone ever gave me crap about too little carpeting, I'd simple claim they are tripping hazards for the elderly. I'll bet it would hold up in court.
On the other hand we change from shoes to slippers when we come in so there isn't much clunking around.
