My friend’s son is moving to Manhattan from London, England for work. My friend told me to help his son look for a place in Manhattan. He is 25 years old and know absolute nobody in the city. His problem is the company is will be joining is only had 15 employees and all off them are in their 40’s-50’s with families. He will be the only “kid” or young person there. He wants to move in some part of Manhattan where there are a lot of young single people in his age group (23-28 years old) were he can make friends with. He wants a place where there are full service amenities (a gym, pool, concierge service). He can spend up to $8,000 a month on rent if need be. Can anyone tell me of which part of Manhattan he should move to and if possible do any of you know of a specific buildings in which there is a very high concentration of young/single people with the full service amenities .This way he is more likely to make friends if he sees the same people everyday living in the same building. Thank you
In my opinion, paying $8,000/month on rent is a waste, or simply unnecessary. Especially for a 25 year old. However, if he wishes to do so, then he should simply go through a broker and not waste time on message boards. He should also consider purchasing if he is able to afford that much and is thinking of living here long-term.
If he does indeed having this spending ability, I would also hope he has the intelligence and maturity to do his own research, since he is the one that will be living there. Hopefully he is looking as well and not relying on you?
This guy may have a rent allowance from his employer, especially as he is coming from abroad, there is no need to go through a separate broker which he will most likely have to pay for himself. Sheaosaurus and wallstreetmafia made some good suggestions. I know a couple working for the Danish embassy who have a similarly large rent allowance x2, because they are a couple.

If that is the case, in my experience with colleagues who had similar situations, their employer also assisted with the apartment search.
100 Maiden Lane is basically a frat house. Silver Towers out on 42nd and 11th has a lot of young professionals, most are single or couples. It has a pool as well.
A word about 2 Gold. It is a party building. And he will definitely make friends if he goes out onto the roof deck on weekends and mingles.
