I have a friend coming into town for Thanksgiving and she wants to watch the parade from a warm place, preferably a restaurant, bar, etc. Is anyone aware of any places along the parade route that "rents" tables, etc.? My friend is comfortable, so I don't think she'd mind spending a little bit of money for this, so any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

The viewing environment for the parade can be very hostile, including temperature, winds, crowds, etc.

A lot of people sublet their apartments on Central Park West for big bucks on parade day and I have heard that some hotels with views book the rooms with views years in advance so I don't know. Can't imagine a bar or restaurant having a view of anything but hordes of people unless it is above the 2nd floor.

Might be easier and cheaper to buy a really fantastic HD TV ! And maybe better viewing too.
Get your "comfortable" friend to buy you a nice big 60" plasma and then you'll have it afterwards.

Doesn't watching a parade on TV lose something in the translation?

By the way, another great way to see the parade floats without trying to squeeze into the parade is to go the evening before Thanksgiving to see the inflated floats set up in preparation on the UWS by the Natural History museum. Walking through to see them all is open to the public. I did it one year with friends and it was nice to see.

Last year, one of the deal sites (maybe Rue La La) was selling brunch seatings at a restaurant on the route. It was so expensive, I don't remember the place, but someone on Chowhound might know.

Not for me.Fireworks,I'd agree but the Thanksgiving Day Parade or a football game ? I think a big HD TV actually enhances the experience.Unless maybe you have front row 50 yard line yard line seats or an onobstructed seat in one of the parade viewing stands.

I'm with bluedog ESPECIALLY with the T'giving Day parade. All performing acts march downtown doing pretty much nothing and then the stop in front of Macy's AND the HD cameras feeding our big HDTV's and do their stuff...and then go home.

So if you want to see the best of the best, get in a box with Bloomberg at Herald Square for $$$$$$$ or else watch at home. With a DVR, if you see something memorable you can watch it several times.

And at home, you can actually do something useful during the ample boring bits.
