the last time I was in new york my wife noticed a dead rat on the sidewalk in chinatown. like the entire rat had just been left there to decompose. i always figured that the city was filthy, but didn't really notice any difference between chinatown and the other neighborhoods in the city, but then again I don't live there so I really don't know. anyone notice anything in particular about chinatown, that you don't see elsewhere in manhattan?

I saw a dead rat on the sidewalk in Soho today—I don't think that's unique to Chinatown.

But, having said that, Chinatown streets are probably a bit dirtier/less hygienic than some other neighborhoods in the city.

I'd be more concerned if I saw part of a rat.

Chinatown is filthy because it is crowded. Many of the people living there are immigrants from the poorer, rural parts of southern China. If you think Chinatown is filthy, visit certain part of China. Very eye opening. In Chinatown, even if they can afford better, they often crowd themselves into apartments to save on rent. On the plus side, they are VERY hardworking and there isn't a lot of crime and thuggery like in some of the other NYC so-called "diverse" communities. Chinese don't get stuck in a generational welfare victimization mentality. By the 2nd generation, they are generally pulling themselves into the middle class.

I found a dog nail in my won ton. I thought I could not place the meat. Thing is, all the Chinese restaurants in my area seem to use the same won tons.
