I've been working in Long Island for the past year and a half and am thinking of selling my place in Clinton Hills and moving to Queens. Any suggestions on areas? I am a single black woman (40's) and would like an area where I could walk to shops and public transportation. I have been looking at LIC and Sunnyside. Would those places accept me?

Thanks for any suggestion.

Where on Long Island are you working and do you intend to drive or take transit to get there?

Woodside has LIRR service, and while it doesn't have a lot of Blacks (mostly Whites and Hispanics with some Asians mixed in), I don't think anybody's going to care.

Woodside, Sunnyside, and LIC are some of the more racially diverse areas in Queens, so I doubt anyone is gonna bother you.

They are all solid neighborhoods, but some parts of LIC [like Queensbridge] are pretty shady.

Kew Gardens is beautiful, quiet, diverse, and safe. Easy walk to the LIRR, close to the E and F trains, and there is the Q10 bus that goes from Union Turnpike to JFK airport as well as the Q54 that goes from Jamaica to Williamsburg, Bklyn. I love it here.

I don't think you will have a problem overall although I am sure there are still many buildings with racist owners who will find ways to exclude those they don't want. But most respond to only one color: GREEN!

Are Rego Park and Forest Hills too far out for you?

Can you handle the expense of Brooklyn Heights...a nice place to live and a zip into "town?"

Thanks for the replies folks, very helpful. I am looking at those areas and will explore them further.

I drive via the LIE to work but it would be great to be near the LIRR as well.
