If it is just you and other adults you can just take your pick of Harlem or Brooklyn. If children are involved the better areas of Brooklyn are better. The schools are better. There are more extra-curricular activities for children.

ritanyc is on a distinguished road
it depends on where you work and how far you want to be on the subway. there are GORGEOUS FAMILY ORIENTED RAINBOW LOVING areas in Brooklyn (Park Slope) and trendy places that are getting great attention (Williamsburg) and lots more, but then there is Harlem, situated ON THE ISLAND! Depending on whether you like to commute alot or not, I would make my decision this way, bc you can still get really nice and really large 1bedrooms in Harlem for 1600 and you can get that same amount in nice areas in Brooklyn. Maybe a couple hundred cheaper, but I doubt it anymore. The market knows the nice areas ALWAYS lol and capitalizes, so just decide whether you want to live on the island or not. I had the same dilemma but then I realized that I am the type who is always out and partying around in Manhattan and even Harlem is too far up, so thats when I knew if Harlem was far from lower Manhattan where I socialized a lot, then forget about Brooklyn. Make your decision that way: amenities, convenience, work, play, etc... You can always find a great location to live and find an apt to call home surrounded by the type you are looking for.
