Maybe this holds true in some areas of the country, but not in the outer boroughs. Most of my Italian friends who have a parent or grandparents from the old country are pretty fluent in Italian.

Archie would hate Queens IMO. I believe he is from Flushing. Flushing has over 200,000 people living in it's zipcodes (11351/52/54/55/58/67/71/81/90) and about 55% of the population is Asian. Hell, Downtown Flushing is the largest Chinatown in the city (I even heard the largest on the East Coast) We all know that the Archie Bunker character was a borderline racist. The guy would of moved out years ago.

If we had Archie Bunkers today the NYC area would not be the 3rd world dump it had become.

I walked down Myrtle ave in Ridgewood (where I lived in the 70's) this spring for BLOCKS and could not hear one person speaking Engish.
Lots of young Anglo girls pushing multi-racial babys in strollers, I almost threw up !!!

Oh well sorry. I am one of those "3rd world" people. I speak perfect English, though.

HAHHAAA!!! i go far, but i don't go this far. i do agree that if the archie's had stuck their ground that we would have many of the problems we do today. i'm surprised that he didn't refer to the multi-racial babies as mulattos, half-breeds, or quadroons....lol

that could be an answer, but the reality is that until this current wave of immigration, immigrants worked very hard to become americans and assimilate, it was thought to be low or ignorant to not be able to speak english and non english speakers had a hard time finding work, so between pride and economic reality, they all became real americans, unlike many of the current waves of dirtbags infesting our country now.

Teddy Roosevelt summed it up well with this:
