NYC tops Beantown in venture capital funding deals, dollars - NYPOST.com

NYC has now surpassed Boston as the number 2 for Venture Capitalist only after Silicon Valley of course. This is great news for the diversity of our economy here in NY.

Nyc has a longway to go in order to surpass palo alto region. There is alot of talk about startups especially from out of towners. Also most of the start ups is centered around ios app development.

Would love to know how the raising of 70 million dollars more than Boston over a single quarter(3 mos) translates into "great news for the diversity of our economy here in NY."

It's kind of embarrassing that we would be behind Boston and SF in venture capital raising to begin with, considering that NY is at least 10 times the size of either Boston or SF and is the home of Wall St and supposed to be the financial capital of the world. We are supposed to celebrate because we changed 2nd and 3rd places with Boston ? NY should be in first place by a few miles.

Exactly how does raising a paltry 70 million more than Boston over a 3 month period translate into "great news for the diversity of our economy",especially when silicon valley raises 4 billion ? Is this the first quarter ever that we even got to 2nd place ? Might not Boston or some other city come in second in the next quarter if the right start up company happens to be located there and manages to raise 100M? What would have happened if there had been a single start up in Austin that raised 100M last quarter?

Maybe if NY ranks 1st over a whole year or couple of years it might start to mean something significant but getting excited over this sounds pretty pathetic to me.

Whoa calm down just because were bigger than than Boston and Silicon Valley does not mean we can be number 1 in every category. Boston and Silicon Valley has had huge head start over us in this area and the fact that were gaining ground and has now surpassed Boston is good news. We'll prob never pass SV but if we can keep growing and get somewhat close thats good news as well.

Dont hold your breath! NYC still has along way to go to even surpass Boston has number 2 in overall venture capital for startups. Nothing cant surpass Silicon Valley in the states, only places on earth are in the regions China and India can surpass silicon Valley since those two countries have exponential growth in Urban areas and tech industry. Not only that NYC startups is only based on web services and app development and most of the app development is based around ios, not everyone has an iphone or an ipad. The app and web services may be benefial to many people in the city of ny but not everywhere else. NYC should try to lure hardware makers to open up shop in NYC to make hardware products for the masses. Even a silicon chip factory or an R and D facility in NYC would be good.

Yea I didn't say we'd ever surpass SV I was saying it would be good if we can close the gap a little bit. I do agree with you on the hardware part though most of our startups are for software based business'.

This still means that the NYC economy is a 1 trick pony dominated by finance.
