My friend and I will be staying near 57th St and 6th Ave. What is the easiest way to get from there to downtown near the WTC site (and back)?
From what I can tell, either the M20 bus or the #5 train?
You can take the M5 Bus and get off on Broadway - Park Place (right across City Hall Park) or walk up to on 59th street 8th Avenue and take the A or C train to Chambers Street. Both methods are withing easy walking distance to the WTC site (2 to 3 blocks away)
Since you're a tourist, i suggest taking the M5 bus since you get to see 5th avenue, soho, etc. Try to get a window seat.

If you want to see Manhattan on your way to/from the site, you can walk over to Central Park South/6th Avenue and take the M5 down to Cortlandt Street. It's a slow ride, but you'll get to see much of Manhattan on the way.
Going back, the M5 stops along Church Street and lets you off right by 57th Street/6th Avenue.
Alternatively, the fastest way is the subway. Going there, you can take the Brooklyn-bound (F) to West 4th Street and then go upstairs and transfer to the Brooklyn-bound (A), (C), or (E) to Chambers Street/World Trade Center.
Going back, there's a direct way (it doesn't work going to the WTC because the stop is only open northbound). You can take the Queens-bound (R) train from Cortlandt Street to 57th Street/7th Avenue.
If you have a MetroCard, you get a free transfer from the bus to the subway, so you can take the bus there and the subway back, or vice versa, and it will only cost you one ride.

That is correct. The Cortlandt Street station is only open northbound.
You're probably going to be using transit a lot while in NYC, so make sure to pick up a MetroCard when you get here. It gives you free transfers and it's a lot easier than carrying around a bunch of quarters for the bus, and having to buy a ticket every time you enter the subway.
Yeah, take the bus for sure, it's like a free tour. I agree with the M5 suggestion - definitely the most scenic.
To go back uptown you can catch the M15 at the Staten Island Ferry, which goes up the east side past the Brooklyn Bridge, UN building etc. Just get off at 57th and 2nd then walk crosstown to 6th Ave.
