At night derilcts (usually older White Men with psych issues) roam the platforms as a prior poster mentioned. Young Women should not be unaccompanied after dark.
Just make sure to use some common sense. Also, don't be looking down on your smartphone screen at all if possible. If someone approach you, you would be better prepare if you are not looking at your smartphone. If you done these thing, you should be just fine.
I think it depends, i am a young female too. Last week while I was waiting at the platform of Flushing Main Street train station to Manhattan, it is only 8:44pm, and there were only few people on the platform waiting, and then there came two white man looked like 40-50 years old, one of them stood close to me and said loudly" hey miss...you are so pretty". His tone is frivolous and sounds he had bad intention. I did not even look at him and kept looking on my phone screen. Shortly he moved much closer and said " BEAUTIFUL!" directly to my face, with fierce eyes and lecherous smile. I took a look at him, and I was gonna say" I know, you ugly" but I did not and left quickly. Because there was few people around and if I confronted him I would be at a disadvantage since it is hard to seek mediate help. And it is highly possible that he is a sexual offender and might have psychological problem. It is because of this incident I decided not to go to flushing at night alone......this is horrible. And I hope females can be aware and know how to protect themselves. I have not slept well since this incident. SO I do not think flushing is fairly safe since people there are miscellaneous.
Unfortunately what you described happens everywhere. I’ve had similar experiences above ground in broad daylight in other neighborhoods. Flushing/Main Street is still probably one of the safer subway stations simply because of how busy it is. You have to always exercise caution though and I think you did the right thing getting away from them and not engaging.
Fine. Turns "boondocks" at night (all the stores close!), but you'll be fine. Only concern is the wait for a bus, if you have to take it! Long wait at night. That's an MTA, not a neighborhood thing....!

Bland Houses are decidedly a lot tamer now it seems. Saw families walking through the grounds at 10 pm this past weekend. It's been like that for a few years now I think. I reckon it's the opening of Skyview Center and new stores along College Point that probably did it.
I have waited at the bus stop you mentioned at 2,3,4 am many times and always felt safe for a variety of reasons.
1. There's are always people nearby who use main st to transfer to buses that run to where subways don't service. You will never be alone even at 3am in the morning.
2. There are several karaokes and late night restaurants nearby so there are people constantly walking by in case you need help.
3. In addition to regular police patrols, there is MTA police stationed outside there late at night which will deter anyone from harassing you.
4. If you're still scared, you can wait inside the subway station near the booth or in the waiting area where there are cameras. Just look at bus time on your phone and then go up to the streets when the bus is a few stops away. This is also helpful to stay out of the cold when its freezing in the winter.
5. There's also a 24 hr dunkin donuts at main st/roosevelt ave where you can buy a donut or something and wait inside the store until your bus comes.
