I've recently applied to St. John's University in Jamaica, Queens and I was wondering if I could get some feedback on the area. I know how far out it is from Manhattan and I won't be in the "Sex and the City" part of town yadda, yadda, it's not that big of a deal for me as long as I can go to Manhattan semi-often. I'm more concerned on the safety and what there is to do in that area, seeing as if I go that's where I'll be. Safety, food, entertainment, etc. are what I'm asking about.

(Also, if anyone knows of any sports bars where I'll be able to get some wings and watch the Hawks, Fire, Bulls, Cubs, etc in New York?)

The area around St. John's is reasonably safe. It is mostly residential with commercial areas for small stores. No high rises there. There's a hospital in the neighborhood and not much in the way of entertainment. It's sort of semi-urban. There are no subway lines within walking distance, but lots of buses. You will need to take a bus somewhere if you are looking to go out and have some fun.

St. John's is between Hillcrest and Jamaica Estates both are nice suburban enclaves. It gets kinda sketchy if you "go down the hill" to Hillside Ave. Though you'd be fine during the day. The main Queens Library is a walkable distance from the university. Union Turnpike to the north is a busy main street. Has alot of stores and a few bars (Sly Fox being one of them.)

To get to Manhattan you'd have to take the Q46 to Queens Blvd and get the E or the F train. Its only like a 15 minute ride to the station. I think the school has its own Manhattan express buses as well.

Thanks guys, I kinda figured there're no high rises there seeing as how far out in Long Island it is. I figured it would be more along the lines of Staten Island, very residential. Knowing that around the campus is safe is good, pretty much everything else I'm sure if I ask them they can fill me in.

You're in Queens. Not Long Island. And there are high rises in Queens. Just not really close to the St. John's campus.

Geographically, yes, Queens is on Long Island.
Politically, Queens is one of the 5 boroughs of NYC, and is not in Long Island. Long Island is usually reserved for Nassau and Suffolk counties only.

That's what I was referring to...it's ON Long Island. I know it's part of NYC, but it's still on Long Island. I guess it's just a difference in not being from there. I know and get that Queens and Brooklyn are both part of the city but I didn't think for saying that they're on Long Island (which we established that, yes, those 2 boroughs are on an island called Long Island) would get so much backlash.
