I lived near the Ditmars stop, which is a nice area full of good food and small shops, but the area around 30th Avenue is even younger and more lively (and probably has more rentals in large buildings).

Also, now that I think of it, why not live in Long Island City (one stop on the N or 7 outside Manhattan). Not as nice, but the housing stock is brand new and cheaper than Manhattan.

As someone else mentioned, you could consider Hoboken. It was recently rated as the most dog friendly city in the US (Hoboken, NJ ranked Number One dog friendly city in America | Hoboken411.com). For around $2300 you could get a 1 bedroom in a new condo building directly on the Hoboken waterfront with spectacular views one stop to Manhattan on the PATH train (10 mins).

I'd also second Fort Greene in Brooklyn as well as Park Slope and Carroll Gardens. One bedrooms in walkups go for about $2200+ in those areas and new construction you're looking at closer to the top of your budget for a 1 bed.

I agree to midtown 50's and 6 ave Queens is your best bet for a short commute, and good savings.
Can't go wrong with either LIC or Astoria, although I would prefer the latter if I had to chose.

Just for context, I had a lovely 1.5 bath 2 bed with a large balcony in Astoria for $1850 in a private house, and people thought I overpaid.

you should be able to get a 1bd in Yorkville that will allow dogs. Central Park and East River (with dog parks) near by. Yorkville would be plenty safe.
