It's dissappointing but necessary. I'm not sure for the reason why Starbucks ever allowed anybody to go in there considering they are not cheap. But sooner or later these places probably realize that having 50 extra people flush the toilet a day X 365 a year adds up. Not to mention washing there hands, paper towels, soap and toilet paper. If it was a place with cheaper product you might see people decide to go ahead and buy something (public bathroom is almost a marketing tool that way) but I don't think that's the case enought to out weigh the costs.
Plus a lot of regulars probably have experienced issues where it was an annoyance to have random visitors use the bathroom.
Also, some people have no manners and trash the bathroom. I remember seeing a used and bloody tampon on an overfilled trash can in a starbucks. This is a smart move for Starbucks.
The bathroom in my morning Starbucks is usually pretty clean, but one day I saw a homeless person coming out of it. It really grossed me out. I can understand why they are doing this, but I do think that the restrooms should be available to customers. I guess it would be hard for them to monitor this though so it's easier to just close them off to everyone.
I guess there must be something in overpriced coffee that alters brain chemistry in a way that would make one want to clean up after himself.
I wonder if that's hormonal or genetic or just the caffeine?
I guess it would be IMPOSSIBLE to imagine that those paying for coffee are the same ones trashing the toilets? Naaah, only the BEST people use Starbucks...or is it possible that those too stupid to make coffee are too stupid to keep a bathroom clean? Hmmm.
But if they are going to close Starbucks' toilets, I am going to have to rejigger my diuretic regimen.
They should put some sort of machine that asks for a $1 to use the bathroom.
Aw, Manhattan used to have this policy. Back in the day you couldn't find a public place to pee in unless you had some coinage to put in the slot affixed to the door.
Sure people went under doors, people would trash the coin machine and steal the coins. Then finally one day the city got rid of those. Thank God. It's not pretty hopping around trying to find change or realizing you had no change for the time of calling.
That play Urinetown was based on paying to pee.lol
My guess is freaky people were probably hooking up in the bathrooms. I was told by an employee of Best Buy they stopped allowing shoppers access b/c people were having sex in them.

Hooking up, hookers doing johns, drug dealers doing sales, etc...
Smart move on Starbucks and as narsty as they are, no amount of grossness beats a particular famous restaurant chain ladies restroom near Queens Center Mall exact location within the Target shopping area. I complained to the manager that either an elephant took a poo and had her period in all the toilets or they were JUST that nasty that they could not be bothered to clean the restroom. She gave me a gift certificate to a free meal which I did not use!
