Starbucks to close restrooms in NYC - NYPOST.com

Where to "go" has always been a challenge in NYC. You know are a long-time NY'er when you know where the cleanest public restrooms are. For example I once went through the security checks at the United Nations visitor entrance just so I could use their public restroom.

Well I can understand Starbucks not wanting people to trash their restrooms. Random people coming in probably leave a huge mess that needs to be cleaning several times a day. Not to mention drunk people, homeless people etc.

However, I'll have to keep this in mind as I've had to use their bathroom a few times myself! I guess if I'm desperate I'll have to order something. lol

There were many times I nearly mistook the Union Square Starbucks for a homeless shelter or shantytown, there were more bums than customers. Cutting access to restrooms should put a stop to that, amen.

They should put some sort of machine that asks for a $1 to use the bathroom.

and where do people go to the bathroom when you need to . i hate the policy of having to be a customer.

you would think people would have compassion for another human when they need the bathroom.

man really is rotten.

Ordering a coffee is not going to get you into a bathroom at one of these Starbucks branches where the bathrooms are closed to all customers. Employee-only bathrooms means no one uses them except the employees.

It's dissappointing but necessary. I'm not sure for the reason why Starbucks ever allowed anybody to go in there considering they are not cheap. But sooner or later these places probably realize that having 50 extra people flush the toilet a day X 365 a year adds up. Not to mention washing there hands, paper towels, soap and toilet paper. If it was a place with cheaper product you might see people decide to go ahead and buy something (public bathroom is almost a marketing tool that way) but I don't think that's the case enought to out weigh the costs.

Plus a lot of regulars probably have experienced issues where it was an annoyance to have random visitors use the bathroom.
