I don't have money for broadband internet so I guess I need to go with free dial-up (since dial-up these days cost the same as DSL anyway)...but I don't have a landline phone service. Are there any dial-up internet services in the Queens area that will set me up with dial-up internet service without a landline phone?

How do you do dial-up without a landline? Or maybe I just remember dial-up differently.

You need a landline to have dial-up internet. You connect to the internet through the phone (landline) line. (Does dial-up internet even exist anymore?????).

Ah. Well if that's true, then the phone landline bill will probably be higher than the $10/month dial-up service anyway...I might as well get the $15/month DSL plan since Verizon tells me I don't need to get phone service for DSL.

I googled it and apparently Earthlink dialup and a few others still exist. But you would need a landline, like we've already pointed out.

Yes, I'm sure many people who don't have broadband available in their area either have dial-up or satellite service, I think...

According to the US Securities and Exchange Commission, there are still several million AOL subscribers: http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1468516/000119312510176095/d10q.htm

See if you can split wireless internet with one of your neighbors. That will lower your costs, and their costs as well.

If you want internet just use your mobile phone or use your mobilr phone as a tether or as a wireless hotspot.

They exist and they are still abou $10 a month. But internet pages have gotten so much more complex in the last decade that I would think a 50Kbps connection would be worthless except for e-mail and the very occasional bulletin board. (Call it up before going to bed so it's ready by morning.)

If I couldn't afford a high speed line and did or didn't have a landline, I would survive with frequent trips to the library computers (and Wi-fi connection if I could afford a laptop.)

donnyre,
Do you have cable TV?

No, I don't have any phone services (landline or mobile) nor any television services. If I had the money for that I probably wouldn't be asking how to get free internet heh

In any case, I think I've found one but I think I need to purchase a dial-up modem and figure out how to use it because I don't think my computer has one
