I'm very familiar with slang, but slang is not universal. Slang changes from city to city, neighborhood to neighborhood, racial group to racial group.

Most of us here are NYers, true. But there's variance in how we all speak.

The 2nd to last paragraph and title here are golden.

So you're still saying you don't know what the meaning of the term "ghetto" is the way it's being used on the NYC board of City-Data? Ever heard of deducing something by examining the context? Seems like you enjoy being dense about this topic. Enjoy it.

The language of the hood or of ghetto people is called EBONICS. Ask Big L.

I disagree. There are different degrees of ghetto. You could have an area that's all housing projects like Brownsville or Morrisania, or you could have an area that's a little rough like Corona or Sunset Park. Somebody with some years of experience living in an urban environment might feel comfortable in the latter two, but not in the former two.

I agree whitlock and also well said. The most important thing for the out of towners is being in an area that is like minded and caters to there needs and wants. Do you think a Transplant would want to eat arroz con pollo con habchuelas unless if the establishment is not Zagat rated no? I know alot of Transplants. I had a guy from Michigan asking me if I can watch his 25 year old daugther, I loled, and I found out these chicks all they do back home is F and S. Many Transplants are insecure and they are also very wary about Native New Yorkers except the Landlords and the Realestate agents who are also Natives. My thing is that this is a city and no matter where you live you have to expect the excpected and unexpected because anything can happen around the corner on any street in NYC ghetto or yuppiefied and even wealthy areas.

If I was to move out of NYC and move lets say the south I too would be concerned about safety especially since people from the north generalize southerners as backwards and gun holding Blacks and Hicks/Rednecks who live in three story housing projects and stretches of trailer parks and attend religous services like those Taliban dudes. I too would pack a gun and live in an area full of like minded Transplants just for my safety. With the economy being so bad and so many people dying to move out of the burbs and the country to move to the city and vice versa everyone is worried about safety.

When I think about ghetto for the most part I think about the Jews who lived in Dosodoro in Medieval and Rennisance Venice. Play Assassins Creed 2 city of Venice and visit the quarter and see some of the delpated buildings drunks and prostitutes hanging around. In an American perspective when I think about Ghettos I think about the Mexicans in the Colonias, Native American Reservations, Ebonic speaking Blacks in Housing Projects and Trailer Trash Whites. Seriously people need to educate themselves about what a Ghetto really is. I already know a few people from Tennesse who laughed at Blacks hanging around Mott Haven projects you call that a ghetto visit Memphis, you will **** your pants. If you get your iphone stolen in Harlem thats your fault and if you get your Mercedes SUV in a car Jack in Charlotte North Carolina by a Meth Hick holding a sawed off shotgun that his father gave to him, thats your fault.

Last where are the Asian Ghettos in and around NYC and USA?
