Are there such places? Don't mind if it's a greasy spoon, a deli or just a bar with a decent atmosphere and food. Perhaps 5th Ave isn't the best place to look but if you know of any great places between 42nd and 54th I would very much appreciate it.
Not knowing your tastes, I would recommend going to Yelp.com, putting into midtown restaurants, and judge by the map and the reviews. There are hundreds of places in that location to choose from. You can see the budgets and types of food to decide.
I would suggest Prime Burger on E51st, between Madison & 5th, across from St. Patrick's, next door to Olympic Tower. It's an old-fashioned New York coffee shop, and would best be described as a period piece.
Slightly out of your area range, but well worth the trip if you have a couple of extra minutes, Burger Joint in Le Parker Meridien Hotel is a good spot as well, and very reasonably priced, too. It's on W56th Street.

You will also find a smattering of chain restaurants, not unlike everywhere else, including Chipotle, Moe's, etc. in the general vicinity of Midtown.

Between those streets, I would also suggest venturing further west... 9th avenue has a plethora of great restaurants. And then you're slightly in a more "locals" area (more tiny neighborhood joints) although there are some chains too. You'll have less of a "Times Square/tourist" feel.
If you go to Madison & 5th, there's some cheap food around there. There's McDonald's, pizza, and on the next block, Cafe Zaiya, which I highly recommend, has Japanese cuisine.
Fifth Avenue is NOT the street to look for Cheap and Cheerful eats.
