we saw this place on unique eats on the food channel making their own tortillias and tamales so we popped over today for lunch. what a really good place. i thought the tamales were the best ever not that i tried all that many.
if your in the area over by the queens science museum you got to try it.
I'll have to head over there soon. As a Mexican who grew up on nothing but authentic Mexican food (mother learned to make it all by hand and the old fashioned ways) I've been disappointed by the lack of good Mexican food in this city :\
on the tv show the owners said exactley that. all the mexican food they tried in nyc wasnt like their moms.
we met them today,lovely couple.
i wasnt quite sure what to do with this little container containing a lime, onions, radishes, lettuce and some herbs which im not sure as to what they were.
i got the pozole soup and a tamale, my wife got the soup and the tacos so im not sure who the little container was for. im guessing the green hot sauce in the little container was for the tamale and the red suce for the taco but the container with the onions and radishes remains a mystery as to which one got it..
first time trying horchata too, that was very interesting and so good.

Come on up to Washington Heights. After YEARS of suffering without decent Mexican food, I was ashamed to find an excellent hole-in-the-wall has been in my serving up great fresh authentic food and they just expanded to a full-size place, too. One is called La Villita and I can't remember the name of the other place. They are on St. Nick around 183-184. Seriously - this place is so authentic sometimes I'm the only English-speaking person in the place. There's also another place farther south; Taco Santa Clara maybe? I don't like it as much, but it might be regional differences.
Mathjak, let me ask you something: Where you saw that they offered tacos was there options such as "Lengua, Barbacoa, Cabeza, Al Pastor," etc? Because if so, I am going ASAP xD
A lot of places claim to be "authentic" and serve "tacos" but sadly it's just ground beef meat or straight beef only
i wouldnt know one from the other but the menu is on the link i posted above. i do see al pasor , barbacoa and carnitas listed. on unique eats they showed how they do carnista's. it was a work of art taking hours.
I've been there a few times and thought it was great. Even got a little tour of the downstairs where they make the tortillas. I recall the fish tacos as being particularly delicious.
