We actually live outside Houston. She has a good head on her shoulders, went to college in the city in a shady area for 4 years. She didn't live on campus, but took a lot of night classes, so she knows that type of situation. She certainly wouldn't start anything with anyone, though she isn't a real "thug" type. I presume she will stick to herself, she has some friends in Manhattan and that is what worries me most...not so much during the day, but going out with her friends then coming home at night.
Does that really matter? Street smarts aren't going to stop you from being mugged or getting caught in crossfire. There are pleny of members FROM NYC on this site that have been mugged.
I'm just saying, if she knows how to handle herself and is living in a marginal area, there is less chance of a lot of things happening. Of course nothing is going to keep you out of a crossfire or random attack. I don't know if there is even an area of Jamaica that could be considered "marginal" though. I sure as hell wouldn't live there.
Actually, I wouldn't even walk that neighborhood during the day.
Same here. Like I said in another thread, my dad drives a school bus there. Drug dealers and other criminals are always hanging out playing dice in the streets. My dad had a stop down a block where some of them were. He waited for them for like 5 minutes to move out of the way, but they didn't. So he said politley "Excuse me, could you guys move, I have a stop here." They got out of the way, and when he let the kids off the bus one of them came up to the door, lifted his shirt up to reveal a gun in his pants, and said "You better not come down this mother****er no more." My dad told his company about this, and they had cops stationed there for the rest of the week.
That area sounds bad. I will recommend to your daughter to move somewhere else in Queens where is much safer. Then she can go to school during the day, where there are more people around. You said that you have concerns about when she goes to Manhattan and then coming back late at night to Jamaica. So it is better for her to go home at night in a safer area in Queens. Just my two cents.
I believe York College is right next to Jamaica Station.
