Relocating to Silver Spring, Maryland with small daughter (apartments, rent)

I am a single mother trying to plan a move to the Silver Spring area with my 5 year old daughter. It is quite difficult since I know close to nothing about the area. I would like to find out as much as I can I am reading up so much and I thought I found some great apartments- until I read the reviews! My rent max will be around $1600.00 Safety is extremely important to me. I'm reading some scary stuff! Suggestions PLEASE!!!!

I understand that commuting is a nightmare sometimes so I would like to stay fairly close to the office. Also, want to enroll my daughter in a good public school.
