Good morning all, and a happy New Year.

I'm 29 and I've recently come into some money. I've always dreamed of living in NYC, but the awful truth is I've never even set foot on her streets. I plan to find a hotel and stay there for a while to see if living there appeals to me and to have a base of operations as I look for a new home.

I would like to live off approximately 200k a year, although if needed I can dip into more. I'm looking for an apartment around the 1.5 million range. It will be bought outright. I'd like to keep a car in a garage and my motorcycle. No matter how much I have I'm going to hang on to the same old beauty of mine.

My tastes are not terribly extravagant, yet. I'm more or less leaving the college bum lifestyle of pizza and beer for breakfast followed by pizza and beer for dinner. I don't think my expenses will be outrageous, but I do wish to expand my tastes and enjoy some of the finer things in life as a proper adult.

If this sounds conceited or braggy I sincerely apologize. That's not the kind of person I'm trying to be. I'm just a young man who worked very hard, took some chances and got extremely lucky. Now I need to know how to live and what to expect.

Thanks!

-John

maybe, who cares though.

If he's buying an 1.5mm apt "outright" what kind of expenses is he expecting to spend 200k on per year. He's more concerned about talking himself up rather than asking anything specific.

So you won the lottery and are going to spend 200K a year???

Why do you need the advise of strangers on a forum?? Why don't you get a financial advisor???

Pat, I think you mean 'advice' and not 'advise'.

In your shoes I think I'd ditch the car unless you need to use it regularly. If you need one intermittently you can always rent one. Parking is not so easy in the city and public transportation is fine.

Why would you buy an apartment in a place you have never been to before???

I think you have some growing up to do.

At least come visit first.

Let's see first you have to give 1 percent to all New Yorkers responding to this laughable thread.

Then a few percent to the real estate broker that finds you that apartment in noisy Manhattan. That's on top of the financial adviser money you'll have to spent.

Then you'll have to spend part on tolls or the MTA. I don't know if you're aware who runs that business but I can assure it's not the boy scouts.

Hey buddy, you're in luck! I actually run a toll business on a bridge in NYC and was looking to sell. You can have control of my Brooklyn Bridge if you're interested. $1.5 million sounds like a good starting point, let's negotiate!
