Wow just wow at this thread. Being Guyanese American and proud of it I may say, I just have no comment on what is being said.

It's just sad because EVERYONE, has LOUD PARTIES! Why pick out one ethnic group.

Dayum shame!

My parents are also from Guyana and they're of Caribbean (my grandfather and great grandparents are from Dominica, Trinidad, Barbados, and Grenada), European, and Amerindian descent. Obviously Guyana is in South America but the culture is so similar to the Caribbean islands that many people will refer to us as Caribbeans, personally I identify with both since I truly am of Caribbean descent anyway. Now my a lot of my family lives in Brooklyn & Queens and I've met a lot of other Guyanese people over there & they've always been pleasant. I don't know how you can assimilate that there's a difference between Guyaneses in BX and Guyaneses in BK & Queens, it's ludicrous. As with any nationality and people in general, you will come across some rude and nasty people but you can't let that dictate your opinion of a whole national group of people. I don't mean to be rude, but if you carry that type of attitude around other Guyaneses in BK then I could see why some people will not approach you with kindness.
People always approach me with kindness, but hey its NY and you will encounter a bad egg time to time. Im not rude or ignorant at all its just my expierence of being around other guyanese people, and also coming from a guyanese background. Like I said some guyanese are rude and some are not like the Guyanese I know and been around. If I remember correctly a few years ago the United Nations had gave Guyana a low rating for its citizens of being inpolite. But I tell you the real truth about being guyanese, were not really rude but I can say one thing we are really loud people and sometimes loudness can be interpreted for being rude which the orginal poster of this thread did not point out!

I also agree, loudness should not be toloreated, the guyanese revelers should have been considerate for thier other nieghbors and try to reduce the level of noise.

As for Guayanese people being rude I have not encountered that, so I can only speak on my experiences.
True indeed the British grouped Guyana with the carribbean after they took the colony from the dutch and a section of the terrirtory from venezuela , If I remember correctly from history, guyana was being administered and governed by the govenor of barbados until the mid 19th century. As for Guyana having a caribbean coastline is false. The carribbean coast ends in venezuela and does not extend to Guyana. From going to Guyana myself people always say the sea was the Atlantic, I never heard anyone in Guyana say thier country border the caribbean sea, they say it borders the Atlantic. IF anyone has ever been to Guyana you can naturally see the water is not sea through blue like the islands but black and brown like the amazon. Mod cut: not necessary

Are you West Indian or American? Where do your loyalties lie? Are you trying to assimiliate into American culture?
Guyanese culture is very similar to American only the roots are Afro/Indian instead of Euro/immigrant. Loyalties lie? Guyana is a country of only 800,000 people lol. It's almost like Puerto Rico, a huge proportion of Guyanese live or has family who lives in the US. But they are Guyanese or Caribbean or Black or Indian just like Irish americans are 'Irish' or "jewish" or "italian"
I don't like the tern "west Indian" that can be mistaken as native american.

Your in fact right Guyana does not have its own culture and its culture is based off of asian immigrants and african slaves and native amerindian. Not only that but the people of Guyana did not fuse and combine thier cultures together creating one identity like DR or Cuba, thats why thier really is no Guyanese food, or Guyanese music, its imported and imitated from other countries to Guyana. Yeah a huge portion of guyanese live in the US, most of them are here in New York or Miramar Florida. There are other guyanese communities in Brazil, Venezuela, Barbados, Cuba, Canada and UK but here in US in the city of New York has the most and only Brazil coming in a close second. Geographically Guyanese are South American, but the British Imperial authorties tied Guyana to its British Caribbean Islands. British authorities imported thousands of freed slaves from Barbados to Guyana to work. Only till recently did Guyana improve ties to its continetal nieghbors, but it is an anomly b/c are guyanese South American or West Indian? Its like saying are Israelis European, or Middle Eastern or are Egyptians African, or Arabs and are Russians European, or are they Asian? To be honest I tell other Guyanese that Im Guyanese American!

No Guyanese culture what?! Come on, yes Guyana is made up of different ethnicities and when combined you have the Guyanese culture. We have our own style of speakin, though similar to the Caribbean Islands. I don't know a lot of cultures that have pepper pot, black puddin, pine tart, black cake etc. I could go on and on, I really can't believe you said we don't have our own culture.
