rlrl,
Just ask a couple friends and I'll bet you will find one who will dig around in a closet and GIVE you a 35mm camers. Yes any 35 mm film will work in any brand 35 mm camera. At the very least someone will LEND you a camera til you use up your film. Beware though, if the film is TOO old it is shot. Film has a shelf life.

Yes. Isn't there a website called Freecycle or something, for that very purpose, to give away good stuff that is no longer needed?

I think the best for the OP is to lend a camera as mentioned, with a new one comes the future problems and hassle of "proper disposal" again...

I think, in New York, it is B&H vs. J&R.
My husband goes to B&H because it is near places he frequents. I think women get treated differently there than men. They are mostly Orthodox and I think they think of women differently than others do.

i agree, there is a certain romanticism with a film camera but my Nikon D7000 is not that bad.

How much would a new or used digital camera cost with a lens equivalent (maximum zoom) to 135mm?

I haven't had any trouble with B and H. The only thing I hate about it is the crowds. I've been going there for nearly ten years. One time I did feel I got bad advice and ended up with a camera that wasn't useful to me in the end, but it's possible I emphasized affordability instead of quality when I was asking for suggestions and that's how it happened.
Their prices are competitive and I know that if I have a problem with a product, I can bring it back in, instead of dealing with shipping something back to an online retailer like amazon (which I also love, but I don't buy electronics from them as a rule in case I need to return).
