MODERATOR: Please, do not move this thread to Insurance or Finance, beacause I am trying to get the input of New Yorkers, as it relates to car insurance. And I have no one else to help me. Thank you,

I have a 2010, Toyota Corolla S, and a 2008, Toyota Suv Limited. Both cars are costing me $2,884 per year. I am over 30. I live in NYC, with no points on my license. My deductible is $500 per year.

Here is what I am presently carrying: This is for both cars PER YEAR.

Bodily injury liability $300,000/$500,000 I pay $414.40

Property Damage Liability
$100,000 I pay: $213.00

Basic Personal Injury/NY no Fault: $50,000/$2,000 I pay $$300.00

Supplementary Uninsured/underinsured I pay $54.60

For Comprehensive, I pay $$86.50

For Collision, I pay $373.00

Yes, I know that if I drop the collision on the SUV, I will pay lower rates, but the car only has 25,000 miles, and it is like brand new, and if I have an accident with it, it will cost me a fortune to fix it. It is imperative that I have two cars.

So, let's leave everything the way it is, and just let me know, if you think that paying $2,884 per year for two cars, is too much. And yes, I have a few discounts here and there. A million thanks,

And yes, I know that if I lower my deductible, I will be paying less, but, I rather not.

I deal with insurance all the time (for scooters though, not cars) and not sure which carrier you have, but it does sound high. Insurance also varies by which borough you live in as well (No surprise Staten Island is the cheapest and Brooklyn is the most expensive).

I know State Farm is generally the cheapest as long as you haven't had an accident in the last 3 years. If this is not the case, Progressive or Geico usually follows. Have you tried going on a site like esurance to get a comparison quote?

Can you reduce your bodily injury from 300/500 to something lower? I have to keep that level because I have a personal umbrella policy, but if I didn't have the PUP I would lower the 300/500.

I think it is very high but I cannot give you specifics. A LOT depends on your driving history...accidents, ticket, and the like.

But one thing I have learned through experience: you can save a BUNDLE by shopping car insurance companies.
Long ago I got an ALLSTATE policy that I thought was too high a premium. I called LIBERTY MUTUAL and they gave me a quote for the same coverage that was HALF that premium, and there was no jacking up as the years went by. Also insurance costs are by the day, so you must get a rebate for what you haven't used when you switch.

So go to them all and get the best price.

I added up all the particulars you quoted and came up with a total of $1441.50. What accounts for the other $1442.50? (Is it possible you are listing 6 month quotes on the particulars?)

Do you park both cars on the street or in a driveway? The insurance companies charge you more if you park on the street. Also, you can get a reduction in insurance if you go to your local precinct and let them etch/engrave the VIN number on your windshield.

I'm curious if anyone has a rough idea of what state minimum coverage for an old POS sedan, not used for commuting, not-young male with a clean driving record, would look like. The quote websites are making me angry. Info on any of the outer boroughs is welcome, likewise for on- or off-street parking.

I have Geico, and they are every 6 months. I also have a Personal Umbrella Policy.

I had a fender bender on 2/2009, almost 3 years' ago. In all my life, I have had three fender-benders.
