I can't speak of the Bronx version of Little Italy, but Manhattan is/was the real Little Italy as far as i'm concerned. My Grandparents immigrated to little Italy in the early 1900's, My Father was born Mid-wife on Kenmare St. & lived there until he married my Mother in 67'. My Granparenst dies there in the 80's.
Much of my family are from that area know as little Italy.
