I think OP would find more value in actual suggestions relevant to their questions of where to live rather than a rant about your experience in Riverdale...

What about the Fleetwood area of MT. Vernon or the Rivertowns of Westchester?

You are all quite helpful!
1. I am actually Jewish, not the conservative heavy stuff, but it's not something that's going to put me off.
2. I like WP a lot but the COL is nuts there, I'd pay the same to live much nearer the city...
3. the rest of Westchester is more rural/suburban from what I gather... do they have any towns where you can walk to a shop or a restaurant and have a little life going on outside your door besides WP?
4. I hear Mt. Vernon is not a great area...

Bronxville is really nice and has a nice little downtown with nice shops, restaurants and bars.It has a college too( Sarah Lawrence) so there is life after dark. It's also right next to Yonkers and just over the NYC city line so it's very close to the city...it's only about 20 or 25 mins to Grand Central.Neighboring Tuckahoe is quite nice as well.

I have a teaching colleague who moved from downtown White Plains to Bronxville because she thought White Plains was dead at night. The deserted streets made here feel less safe too, even though I don't think there is a lot of crime in White Plains.
