Default Do You Have a New York Soundtrack?

What are the songs that you consider to be quintessentially New York?

I really only have two songs. When I take Exit 14 off the Turnpike and the road turns directly towards Manhattan, I always like playing "Real As It Gets" by Jay-Z. The song just sounds really "big" for better lack of a word. It just seems fitting as you're approaching the City with its towers beaming towards the sky.

My other song is Alicia Keys' solo version of "Empire State of Mind." Oddly enough, I'm always more hyper approaching the city than I am when I'm actually in the city, so this ballad always seems more suitable to me. The Jay-Z version completely wore on me, but this version never seems to get old.

I respect Frank Sinatra and think he has a better voice, but to me, the album version of Cat Power's "New York" is catchy and modern. I wish she could sing that well live.

I also like David Gray's "Late Night Radio."

These songs remind me of New York City. One by Enya and the other by Celine Dion.

Only Time - Enya WTC 9 11 - YouTube

Celine Dion - A New Day Has Come (slow version) - YouTube

The Celion Dion one is sorta like New York City at around 2:25.

I don't know if they're really New York songs but for some reason they seem like they quite about New York to me at least.

Oliver Nelson released an album called Jazzhattan Suite which was entirely instrumental - If you really want to hear what New York City sounds try that - I have been looking for it on DVD for quite some time so good luck finding it -
