To early to tell if this was accidental or intentional. I'm sure we'll know soon

i think we should ban shopping carts!

actually we lost a friend in port st lucie florida to a shopping cart.

she was at sams club and as she was pulling in there was a cart to close to her car. she started to get out of the car to move it,realized the car was in gear, fell out of the car and the rear wheels went over her crushing her to death.

math your friend didn't get killed by a shopping cart. She was killed because she left the car in gear. She could have been moving a garbage can out of the way...should we ban garbage cans?

This is a sad story either way.

How can it possibly be accidental? - Those (heavy) carts have to be lifted up to get over the barriers, there aren't upper floor sidewalks which you can roll straight off the edge from - they all have barriers.

Correct...it has to be lifted over the barriers so it was no accident. For all we know they were targeted by someone they owed money to, or otherwise pissed off...it may not be random. But again...nobody knows. Could be a new gang initiation. We shall see.

Hoisting a heavy shopping cart over a railing so that it can be dropped in NEVER an accident. It likely requires two people becasue they arre heavy and clumsy.
Alas, these "monkey see, monkey do" recurrences will only increase in number as jackass teens try to out-do one another.

Most horrific in my memory, a couple of young thugs in Jersey City dropped a bowling ball onto high a high speed road with fatal consequences to a woman and her baby.

And now we know the real story. According to the NY Post:

Thug drops shopping cart, pair injured at Bronx mall near Yankee Stadium - NYPOST.com

"Sources said an hour before the attack, several Dominican drivers were arguing over turf with rival drivers, described as African immigrants, when security guards broke it up and sent both groups packing. The two African victims returned, and cops suspect one of the Dominicans saw them and pushed the cart over a 4-foot railing."

So it was not random but purposeful...which IMO makes it much worse, not better.

the fact that "grown men" and i use that term loosely, are fighting what seems to be a cabbie turf war makes it even more disturbing.

There should be nothing disturbing or surprising here. It could have easily been dueling mafia families fighting over turf and executing a rival. This isn't disturbing at all..it's quintessential NYC in 2012...it's Dominicans dueling Africans instead of Italians dueling Irish from 50 years ago.

How do we know that's the story since she didn't live to tell it? It could have been a shiny penny she could have been trying to pick up? Was it the Shopping Cart's fault since it belongs to the largest retailer in the world?

Sad story either way...
