East Village Schools Split Along Racial Lines Under City Policy - DNAinfo.com

I find this to be a pretty interesting article on how the school demographics in the Lower East Side have changed in some ways yet stay the same in other ways, especially considering the policy that was to diversify the schools has gone away.

I'm surprised that the schools aren't mostly Asian.

I'd bet that the supreme ct decision cited in that story was abig reason district 1 stopped considering ethnicity and race as an admissions factor. Despite it's liberal rep many New Yorkers go ballistic at the idea of using it as an admissions factor and many of the best schools will tell you point blank that they don't look at color. It's why it's law that admissiOns to the top high schools are strictly by exam. That's a state law from the '70 s when race relations here were very raw. And it's still that way now, partly because the city wants to hang on to it's white middle class in the public schools and partly because there are too few really good schools at any level. Schools will use zoning, lotteries, interviews, and anything else they want to get the kids they want. But they'll never admit to using race, at least not publicly. It's hypocritical stance that continues to privilege the privileged.
