Seems like trivial stuff, but I despise and even fear those b*stards! In almost 10 years of living in California, I don't recall ever seeing a rat here. Roaches aren't much more common. As I read about NYC, some make it seem like a simple ride on the subway or walk down the street could lead to encounters with rats and roaches. How bad are they? How avoidable are they??

Forget about subway or street, if you are moving into an old building
or apartment in NYC, be prepare to meet you new roomates. You can
never completely shut them out with all the holes and cracks in the
building. It's not going to be big rats, but small mice and small roaches
will show up sooner or later even if you keep the apartment super clean.

Race and roaches are part of nyc flora and fauna. You cant escape them however with proper steps they can be limited. If the Russians, Chinese or Iranians ever throw radioactive warheads at nyc rats and roaches will survive the fallout. Hell they probably might mutate.

I once saw an army of rats getting out of the Elmhurst Avenue subway station in Elmhurst, Queens at 3am. Scared the crap out of me.

How common are rats?
Stand and look at a subway track for 5 minutes: you will see a rat.

The city is swarming with rats and they are everywhere, mice too. Many places, even tall apt buildings, get a mouse or two, especially in winter....and not a big deal. But if you have rats you have serious problems, and there are lots of buildings with rats.

Roaches are a big problem, and it only takes one apt with a roach problem to infest the whole building. So if only 1 person is a pig, the whole building suffers and near impossible to keep them out of your apt. Older buildings are the worst, but it occurs everywhere.
